A PhD on the Road (Tibete)

Lasa

After a very peculiar path to get visas to enter in here i am in the ultimate frontier: TIBET, after being "welcomed"  by that beautiful tibetean lady holding a paper with my name in the middle of the airport hall.  I'll keep that moment until the end of my days

My sport of youth (since 6 years old) was climbing, given me by father as a gift for all the eternity. The first book i've haver red was Tintin in Tibete and that was one of the multiple ways of him to lead me to the mountains while teaching me the real meaning of mind freedom and how to overcome all the obstacles that may come into your way.

And that is exactly the perfect place to deal with fundamental chapter of my PhD.

Genesis play the music to get in (... to get out)

Some friends arrive to join me in this "road": António Viana da Fonseca (another globe trotter), my dear dear friend Gabi (Gabriela Marques) Sandra Coelho and Sara Pizarro. Sara Rios went home from Sri Lanka and might come again if i´ll go to Macau. Rodrigo will join me later.

Com entrada ao sabor dos Genesis (Carpet Crawlers)...You got to get in to get out

Entretanto chegaram uns quantos amigos para fazer comigo esta jornada: António Viana da Fonseca (another globe trotter), my dear dear friend Gabi (Gabriela Marques) Sandra Coelho and Sara Pizarro.

A PhD on the Road (Sri Lanka)

Galle

Sri Lanka is a surprising country marked by a fascinating history, a magnificent landscape and a very warm people. For me it was also the possibility of living a second chapter of a very dear story.

I could feel again all the moments i had kept in my heart, while walking through this Resplendent Island (the meaning of Sri Lanka) with its incredible variety of its fauna and flora, even after a mass destructions during colonial times, the rivers, the falls and the forests, the ancestral genious creating artificial lakes (tanks) for water management since 2000 years ago, the tropical climate, the always green colour of the mountains and the Patana’s (grasslands).

And then there was the people that remember me all about Carolina. The permanent smile, the peace that you can see in every face at any glance, their culture and life expectancy (older than 70 years for both sexes) and the permanent care for environ reflected by Ruhuna (Yala), Gal Oya, Uda Walawe and Lahugala National Parks or the Elephant Orphanage.

As our history, Sri Lanka is full of contrasts, such as The Monks and the Crows, the War and the Permanent smile or the Sweetness and the Rage of Nature. Thus, i just picked up Galle in a stormy day, borrowed the voices of Elton John and the unforgettable Lucciano Pavaroti to leave a song for you, Carolina. YOUR SONG (i know it will end up in your hands)

Thanks for this LOVELY piece of Life

A Love Story - Epilogue from nunocruz on Vimeo.

Pedi emprestadas as vozes a Elton John e esse inesquecivel Lucciano Pavarotti e aqui deixo YOUR SONG. (Sei que há-de chegar às tuas mãos)

Obrigado por este Pedacito de Vida

A PhD on the Road (Sri Lanka)

The Temple of the Monk Alone

Last day we spent together was incredibly shiny, making it easy to go through it without thinking on the next day. We met after lunch, walked on the beach, quiet most part of the time feeling only the pleasure of being together. We abandoned ourselves in a cosy caffee in "Molhe", and let the sun go down on us. When the night fell, we were already in a nice restaurant piled over the sea. A very beautiful night, under the silver moon and with the ocean flowing beneath our feet.

Then, i walked with her to the hotel trying to guess her feelings through her expression. Completely calm and peaceful. We'd talked a few times on the (Last night) subject and she just said " Nuno, there is no way to hapiness. Hapiness is the way. So lets live our way". I was a bit lost on this, but trusting her for the matter.

Arriving at the hotel, we just gave hands and walk up together...

...See the movie at this point (Music: Angel, Sara Mclachlan)

In the next morning i woke up with a whisper in the shadow.

"My love. Please don´t turn on the light, i don´t want us to see nothing but the shadows. This walk ends up here. If everything goes right with surgery i´ll go back to my previous life, and you have yours to live. So, don´t go after me, or visit me in the hospital... Just let our lives flow. Our walk together is our treasure for the eternity".

I didn´t say anythinhg feelling the all truth at each word. I just embraced her very tide and saw her shadow flowing out the room. For a long time i stayed there floating over our path. For the Eternity.

And that was the last time i saw her, for real. And that was 30 years ago

(Weeks later my father told me she had gone home in perfect shape.)

A felicidade é o caminho.

… Vejam o filme neste ponto...(Music: Angel, Sara Mclachlan)

A nossa caminhada termina aqui.

A PhD on the Road (Sri Lanka)

Polanaruwa, Dambula, Kandy, Sygiria, Nur'Elia

Carolina had a serious problem in her brain, with risky consequences in the surgery she had to be submitted. Yet, she didn´t speed up or slow down, keep on floating through life with an incredible harmony. We were both found of mountains because i was a climber since the age of 6 and she was a mountain born, from a place called Nur'Elia, and so my Gerês was an expected destination for our movement

One night in a place called VIDOAL, when we were set by the fire she said to me

"Nuno, the way you look at the horizon just tell me you have the soul of the eternal travellers, and so you will drop in my surroundings sooner or later. When it happens... you go to my mountains, find a place breathing like this one and stay there for a couple of days.  You´ll understand my feelings today. I leave this gift in your future". And then we just abandoned ourselves breathing nature with each other until the sunset arrived

With the idea of coming back to her and get my gift, i just hit the road with those memories as guide, through Polanaruwa, Dambulla, Kandy Sygiria up to Nur'Elia. And this was my Stairway to Heaven with her and Led Zeppelin.

In my way down i´ll drop by again in Kandy, to feel a bit more of the Sinhalese (her) soul.

A Love Story - Travelling with memories from nunocruz on Vimeo.

Aí vais entender-me neste momento.

A PhD on the Road (Sri Lanka)

The First Step (Colombo)

Have you ever seen an epileptic crisis. It is a poweful thing where all your body spend its energy in a titanic struggle trying to calm down brain activity. Mine, however, was provoqued by an ansiety crisis related to the heart beat of youth passion, with the same power of the epileptic crisis. Thus, for me, embedded in this scenary of falling in love for the first time, those are among the most emotionally important moments of my life.

In the following 4 weeks i´ll tell you this sweet story while i´m studying another love of my (professional) life, which in fact is the essence of my professional path. The DMT Test(Marchetti's Dilatometer). When it comes the time to leave Sri Lanka i will have a movie dedicated to "him".

I think Nitin Shawney sound (The Conference) fits in this kind of environment. And you?

Kisses and hugs and Saudade to you all. See you next week

A Love Story - Prologue from nunocruz on Vimeo.

A PhD on the Road (Mozambique)

Maputo

I woke up very slowly, aroun eleven, look around África in one glance and got ready for a Yôga Session. ! hour plus half an hour of total relax to really REST in PEACE (alive). I do believe that the worst thing of our time is the speed at what we have to live, and e keep remeber that life goes as fast as fast we live each day. Thus, always in slow motion mode, pack my bag and ...hit the road to Maputo, while my Patricia kept trying to convince me to leave africa in two jumps: Seychelles and Maldivas, like a flat stone over a lake. Yeah, Maybe...We'll see.

I imagined the moment of steping the the City (Maputo) trough the memories so many time told by my uncles and cousins that spent some time here. I chose the Railway, more romantic, no doubt. With the heart full of happiness, i met Tiago mendonça, Fernando Santo, Vitor Az (who made possible to see the big films, from now on on the blog), Saturnino Chembeze and some other friends with whom i shared genuine laughs.

A dive into the past with Penguin Cafe Orchestra (Dirt), seem to be a cool environment to finish one more chapter of my tour around the world and the mind.

I´ll see you next week end, with the Seychellian flight.

A Special hug to this other Globetrotter (Filipe Martins), who share with me the pleasure of travelling in another trip of other places (See Websites & Blogs of my soul in the lateral bar)

Maputo from nunocruz on Vimeo.

Muit'a nice
