Nomad Minds

One of the best things in a man education is the cross roads with the teachers that really made us think on our own. I always try to be coherent with my thoughts and so, all the good and bad things i taught about my teachers had to be considered when i became a teacher, myself. How could i ever forget my previous taughts?

Since 2003, when i became regent of my own disciplines in University (Coimbra and Aveiro), i´ve been trying to develop a path with my students, learning how to embrace them, erasing the frontier teacher/student, overcoming the Sindrom of Acelerated Thinking (SPA, in Portuguese) and over all teaching while learning and learning while teaching.

Together we have done so many fantastic things, such as 2 conference papers written together and one Festival on Technical Movies (one week and more than 20 presented works ). This is a story that deserves to be told, which will be done in the following weeks under the title "Nomad Minds", since it represents perfectly what have been happening wit us: open minds, moving freely of dogmas and/or conventions. I hope you enjoy it.

Nomad Minds - Living and Learning from nunocruz on Vimeo.

Portraits of a Nomad Life

(ver agora o filme)

O Meu Porto de Abrigo from nunocruz on Vimeo.

Saí-me lindamente, tá claro.

Portraits of a Nomad Life

Mazagon, Last Night on Board

Everything that is good always comes to an end, and so it was with that trip. To comemorate the trip, we´ve just decided, to leave the harbour early in the morning to enjoy the sunrise in the sea, which is not properly usual in our day-to-day life. What i didn´t expect was the oportunity of delighting myself with the set of the moon before the rise of the sun, offering me an insight of what life is all about. In fact,

Everytime a task ends, there´s is another goal to achieve
Everytime a stormy day occurs, there is chance for the rainbow
Everytime a tree is burn, a flower rises from nothing
Everytime a light is turned off, another love lights up your soul
Everytime you are double-crossed, someone else walks together your path with you
Everytime you get disappointed, a new smile shines your day
Everytime a friend dies, a new child is brought to your life
Everytime your touched by a bad moment, a bright chance is offered to you
Everytime the moon sets, a new sun iluminates your smile

And that was the romantic secret of that day. The Moonset and the Sunrise...

... once again with Muse

Portraits of a Nomad Life

On the boat again

And the east wind finally went away, allowing us to return to beloved ocean, altough with no chances of moving to our previous marked destination: Gibraltar. Despite that fact, the soul filled up again, calming down the anxiety provoqued by the need of the sweet balancing and the pleasure of nomading in that small 11m boat that allow us to achieve the real essence of individual freedom. And so, we proceed with specific destiny going around in the ocean, feeling the sun and the salt in our faces and get bumped by the high waves that leave no dry spot inside the boat. Fantastic moment of joy that reinforced capacities, provoqued true emotions and renewed trust so very needed to survive in the cruel world of shadows we have to live today. Finally, we arrived to a small harbour of a quite small town (Rota), finding again the cool rythm of the sailor's life. With MUSE always whispering nice words to our hears.

Portraits of a Nomad Life

Cadiz, Spain

And suddenly, the feared East wind came up, with an incredible strength and a willing to stay, stopping our journey. It became impossible to face it and cross the Strait of Gibraltar. No way. Some years ago we had tried this and we sailed for hours without moving a inch until the boat start crying making us to go back to nearest harbour with some damage to fix.

As everything in life we have to know when got to be patient or even to give up. And so we stayed for 1, 2, 3 days, somehow going impatient, until we knew that was time to go back aborting destination Gibraltar.

Visiting a city coming from off shore is not the same thing as if you arrive by land. This time i understood the sailor and pirate soul of the city, erected by people that are arriving and departing all the time. And that cooled down my nervous soul, maybe teaching me something useful for the desperating times that are arriving to our lives.

As Kipling once said: May i have the courage to fight the things i can, accept the things i don´t, and wisdom to distinguish the difference.

With a kiss and a hug , and again with Muse as guiding light, i leave you the white beauty of Cadiz.

Portraits of a Nomad Life

Chipiona

After a tough time in the ocean, it always taste good to arrive to a small harbour for a quick rest. I always like to observe the life nearshore with the noise of fishermen, seagals or simply other nomads like us. I also like to move towrds a proper shower where you can stay for sometime with no worries of water management. Then pick up the wallet and get ready to walk for hours with no apparent destination until falling down in a nice restaurant with good food and better drink, where you can stay dreaming while watching local people coming and going. For me, this is as important as the time in the sea, and together they are part of the same journey on the old spirit of the "on the road" or "on the boat". Then, drag myself to the boat for a good night sleep, 'cause tomorrow we have to leave again.

Enjoy Chipiona, again with Muse

O verdadeiro espirito "on the road" ou "on the boat".

Portraits of a nomad life

One of the best ground to test your nomad soul is, undoubtly, sailing in the ocean. You just step in the boat and all the chains of your normal life, just go away. The stressing life you are obliged to live, the doublecrossings, the disrecpects, the evil around you just vanish while the salt gets in your face, and everything becomes so simple. It is you and your crew fellows, facing the wind and the oscilatory movement of the boat in the ocean, taking the best of it. And everything moves forward smooth and graceously, setting your soul free in this nomad movement.

I think that for this liberation of the soul the "Muse" can play an important role. They touch me deep with both strong lyrics and power sound. Such as Bowie, Pink Floyd and U2, before them. Hope you like it. This adventure will be presented in 5 movies including this one

The Nomad Sail of the Soul - Sailing away from nunocruz on Vimeo.

Portraits of a nomad life

Portugal

It is rather amazing that i finished my PhD on th exact year of the 25th aniversary of Estudantina Universitária de Coimbra. A group of joy that start with me in my time in the university and where i learnt how to dream, to enjoy life and the meaning of friendship and teamwork. And where i first learnt how to live like a nomad.
25 years later all of that is still there. And maybe, this is the best thing i´ve ever achieved.

Ladies and Gentlemen...

For your joy

Senhoras e senhores,

para vosso Divertimento...

A PhD on the Road - The Obelix Party

And this is the end of a PhD on the Road (i´ll publish one more with the final statistics, whenever i have time to do it).

After the dissertation, a time come to celebrate. I always celebrate with the deepest of my soul, since that´s the way i do everything. The profession, my responsabilities, love, etc.

And so, the Obelix party was born. Obelix because i always wondered who is Obelix apart of is partnership with Asterix, and also because of after every adventure they really celebrate, with all friends and a lot of joy. Moreover, he works in the granites, like i do

In simple words, Obelix party started oficially on Friday, 21:00 (first guests arrived at 20:40) and oficially closed at Sunday 21:00 (last guests left at 22.30, after a chicken soup, a piece of bread and a Guronsan). A real meaningful party for a nomad adventure.

IT WAS A CHERRY ON THE TOP OF THE CAKE (EVEN MORE TASTEFUL THAN THE CAKE ITSELF)

More than 110 friends dropped by, celebrating with me in a fantastic tribute to friendship, love and joy. Me and them, and also all those that wanted but couldn't come, we built together a fantastic piece of life, to be remembered forever.

The four movies left below (half an hour in total) tell that story that shoudn't be left untold.
In the first movie (Prelude) a merging of me and Obelix is shown, supported by the music of Bobby McFerrin (Thinkin about your body), Eels (My beloved Monster) and the soundtrack of the Motionpicture "Amelie". It is the preparation of the party

Then, you enter that fantastic world of joy, and live the party (with all my friends) such as it was still going on (the 3 movies should be seen in sequence). The selected music includes Pink Floyd (Another break in the wall and Wish you were here), Soundtrack of Reservoir dogs (Hooked on this feeling, Blue Swede), John Lennon (Imagine) and Dr. Jones and David Bromberg (Such a Night).

I hope that
all of you that were here can re-live those moments,
all those that couldn´t come, feel somehow compensated
and all that didn´t want to come, feel sorrow.

Anyway, I LOVE YOU ALL.

Just have a drink with you, while you see this, and i can ensure that you will be living what happened here

Thanks for living with me this fantastic piece of life.

I´ll see you around

Kisses and hugs

~

EU ADORO-VOS A TODOS.

A PhD on the Road (The Final Act)

And finally the big day came, with a lot anxiety and i don´t now what else.

But it was really a unique opportunity to discuss all the work with my main scientific and professional references that composed the Juri. Everything had an happy end with a big party with all of them in my house. BECAUSE LIFE IS A PARTY, and you have to enjoy it, as much as you can. I learnt that from my uncle Duarte.

The movie down below was presented in the dissertation (i had to make a movie for that moment). See it and tell me if you find it appropriate.

Kisses and hugs

A PhD on the Road - The Thesis

Granja

After the acumulated experience on DMT in residual soils after the MSc and the calibration experiment i tried to combine both with harmony and some wisdom, which allowed me to define a specific protocol to be applied in residual soil characterization. At the beggining of this walk, i didn´t know how far i could go and how efficient could be the work i was able to produce. However i always had in mind the wise words of Confucius

It is better to bring light with candle
than damn the darkness.

Obviously i feel proud, because it was my dream at the beggining, but the main thing i learnt with this PhD work is how little i know on the subject. Lao Tsé said once something that fits perfectly:

Accepting our ignorance is an act of wisdom
Ignoring it, is to live in illusion

To illustrate this final act i picked up some of the best photos i was able to take in my beloved country, mixed them with the best of my soul (with the help of the always magnificent U2 - No line on the Horizon and Moment of Surrender), hoping to transmit you the pleasure i had builing this last part of the thesis and (maybe) get you interested in coming to enjoy it. In anytime. Just let me know and i´ll be pleasured to guide your steps.

Kisses and hugs

I love you all

A PhD on the Road (The Thesis)

Granja

The work performed along 15 years gave raise to a calibration experiment needed to validate all the conclusions taken from the field work, and at the same time it was a validation of what i had decided to do with my professional life. I lived it following the words that Susan Arrit once said in her Living Earth Book of Deserts

In the deserts, that which seems eternal
may change overnight
and that is less expected
is always a possibility

I've always considered that life is to be lived with audacy, passion an that we shouldn´t never hide or runway from what life offers. There are good moments and bad moments, but we have to live them through. Many people, along the way, considered that i was naif, that i wouldn´t go anywhere, that my dreams were just dreams and that dreams are too dangerous to be followed (just something to say, not to do). I never understood that. How could someone says that something is unfeasible, before even try. Fortunatly, my father had taught me something that i sincerly believe. The most precious things in man life is the ability of thinking by your own brain (plus the heart, i should say) and the freedom to conquer whatever those two main organs of your body tell you. So, i just ignored the comments coming from externals and kept going towards to my dream. Now, after this step, i know that i´ll keep on moving this way. That was my experience, and i think i have the responsability of telling so to those that are in their begginning, as well as always support them to go after their dreams.

Lily Allen is a fnatastic singer, very beautiful, very sweet and yet very accurate in what he says in her lyrics. I love that spirit. Looking for the perfect song for this diaporama i found two musics that have everything to do to what i´ve just said. Not fair is related with audacy and passion that should be demanded for everyone's life. F... you is the perfect way of saying "Forget about what they say and keep on going to your dreams", because it says what have to be said but with no anger (if you are angry, you cannot be clever and you always suffer more than you should). Do you agree?

Post-post: This month (May) i´ve been noticing a friend (or a group of them) from Gorakhpur,India, that has visited this crazy blog almost everyday, followed by some other places in the same country. I don´t if it is someone i know, or just someone that jumped in this think and got stucked. Anyway, i´d like to say that i hope you are enjoying it. And if it is not asking to much, i´d love to know who you are. All the best

No Deserto

A PhD on the Road (The Thesis)

This post is fully dedicated to my friend Mendes da Silva, who left us today. So long, my friend, i will miss you.

I left Coimbra to start a life on my own, after some lasting days filled with alcohol and tears, with my soul full of emotion and a lot of music. Iwas ready to start a new life believing pretty much in living by dreams. I had conquered a good "data base", but with no practice at all, with a lot of dreams to really achieve something useful for the geotechnical society.

I begun this life in Porto, the city where i was born 28 years before, with a new tool in hands (the DMT) trying to apply it to the residual soil characterization, starting from ground zero with a lifetime companion that still walk with me nowadays. António Viana da Fonseca (my supervisor in this thesis). And so, i started walking with some goals in mind, but soon realizing that it is a minor thought. In fact, it is much better to look into the distant horizon, leaving and tasting one day at a time and defining the path in each step. Wise decision, i should say with modesty, because it was that thought that brought me to where i am today, and that will guide my footsteps to an unknown destination towards the end of my days.

Following that old Confucius saying:

What i hear, i forget
What i see, i remember
What i do, i learn

i built a experimental data base to study and apply DMT to these non text-book materials (residual soils) that compose Porto Geological enviroment, walking along with Jazz in my soul, bringing intuiton and harmony to this task. And so, the movie of this post mean to show the scenary of old Porto (hoping to cativate your soul to come to Thesis presentation and for the big party that will be following), with Kate Souza and the fantastic James Brown (from soundtrack of the inspiring Blues Brothers). Sorry, the english of today (which is not so good) but i am in some (stomach) pain, and the brain doesn´t concentrate as usual.
Kisses and hugs

The Thesis - The Residual Ground (Part B) from nunocruz on Vimeo.

Seguindo o velho dito Confuciano:

A PhD on the Road (The Thesis)

The thesis i´ve just delivered is divided in 4 parts (A, B, C, D), respectively designated by: Background, The Residual Ground, The Experiment and the Model. This and the following 3 posts will tell that story.

Part A - Background (A perspective of soil and rock mechanical evolution throughout weathering and the basics of In-situ testing) can be described by the wise words of our Alvaro de Campos (Fernando Pessoa heteronimous)

Only what we dream means what we really are
Since everything we achieve
belongs to the world and to everybody

I left home with 18 years old, going down south to Coimbra to study in the University. I had the mind full of contradictions with the education given by my parents, and the naif ideas i had gave birth. It was the perfect time and the perfect town to go in that stage of my life. Start living on my own, with some difficulties but, at the same time, with a lot of creativity and convictions that i wanted to put in practice. 6 fabulastic years, full of emotions, love, ideals, played along with the music of Estudantina Universitária de Coimbra, a student music group i had the chance to belong (playing the portuguese guitar that was offered me by my father and using the old student clothing offered me by my grand father) from its early beginning until the edition of its first CD with originals. That was the time when i learnt that it was possible to live upon our dreams, being this the true background that fed this PhD work.

The movie down below tells that story with our (student) words in two originals of Estudantina revealing how difficult it is to study in a town so full of life (Afonso) and the "Saudade" that always take place when that time reaches the end (Nostalgia). Consider this as a Serenade to all of you, exactly as those we played so many times for beautiful girls under the moon light. Hope you like it.

Kisses and Hugs

A tese que acabei de entregar está dividida em 4 partes (A, B, C, D), respectivamente entituladas : Background, The Residual Ground, The Experiment and the Model.

A PhD on the Road (Aknowledgments)

Granja

UUUUUUUUUFFFFFFF. What a relief. Finally i finished the document and this trip moves towards the end. I just gave birth last wednesday, leaving it in the university for their judgment, naturally hoping to have success. In this kind of work the glory stays for the man who speaks, but behind him, a lot of people gave their best for the hard work that had to be performed. Those are the workers of the success that always remains in the shadow. I really don´t want that to happen this time. I do believe that is much better for your heart and for your mind, to share in brotherhood with all those that walked along with you.

So this is a tribute to all of you with the words (pay attention to the them) anf the fantastic music of

Muse (Uprising)

UUUUUUUUUFFFFFFF.
