Patagonia - Smashing Serenity

And then, you wake up in the morning and you realize you are in a different planet. Again we hit the road towards Caviahue, a little town located in the foothills of Copahue Volcano (another one), smashed by serenity of the landscape and its silences, only disturbed by the wind and our own voices and noises. The footsteps of this journey in the land of Mapuche indians perfectly mixed within lanscape (for me, indians are the people that better balanced the human life with nature) can be felt by the music of Jesse Cook (Azul), while the sweet whisper of the wind in my ear is blown by the fantastic Ruben Patagónia and his Cancion del Viento. Probably i should stop here, since music and images of the Diaporama say everything that should be said.

However, i´d like to share what took in love my soul in that exclusive scenary. I remembered, once again, of my life in Vizela and Foz-do-Douro, with its permanent harmony and the human chain in a perfect flow, crossing lifes and antecipating so many ways to overcome. And also remembered all the ideals impregnated of freedom i dare to dream about in my times of Coimbra (university), when the internetic model of society was only in the early beginning. After that a huge Tsunami came over. Computers took the lead of our own lifes, promising a sustainable life that would never arrive. The philosophic jump didn´t happen, and the damn machines became our first competitor transforming us in a multi-function box thrown out to a never ending vertigo of rush and greed, cutting out of the scene the space for courtesy, love and care. It could only end in what it did. A fragile world waiting to fall apart.

And there i was, in the middle of the Patagonia , being naif enough to believe again in a society based in sharing, loving and loyalty as a way of making the Earth a good place to live.

And so, i took the chance and cleaned out of my soul the lefties of the disappointment i felt after the presentation of my PhD (this trip is a single gift offered by me to myself, to comemorate that commitment) learning in definitive how to avoid bitterness in your soul. That would only be good to dark grey my horizon.

Enjoy the moment

Curtam o passeio

Patagonia - Chile Out

Early morning, we left all that track of small recent towns (the older is only one century) where the comunity spirit rules and the harmony is whispering with the winds. It reminded me my old Vizela (the small town of my mum) i lived in my childhood and adolescence where things used to be that way. It also crossed my mind how far we are from it.

And from S. Martin de los Andes, we jumped into the pure nature, through rippio roads (off-road), marked by ocasional pueblitos and bridges proper of adventure lands, looking for a way (Passo) to cross to Lanim Volcano in Chile. Unfortunatly, the car papers were not in order and the access was denied. Bad luck, you might think, but how can one feel unlucky in a scenary like the one we were moving through. Impossible to happen in such an overwhelming spot. And so we continued our journey through the argentinian side of the Andes until Vila Pehuenia, a small town in its first steps, in a Far West style.

Enjoy the scenary with the local sound of Los Laikas (Bajando de las Montañas) e Las Voces de Orán (Zamba del Pñuelo)

Patagonia - Chile Out from nunocruz on Vimeo.

Patagonia - The Track to Chile

Bariloche - S. Martin de los Andes

We left Bariloche (the biggest town we have visited in this tour) in our way to Chile, hoping to gradually decrease "civilization" towards the complete melt with nature. My soul was waiting for that movement since the very beggining. A few km ahead, we were completely out of the urban scenary moving again through the Andes. Our goal was to pass Villa L'Angostura and move forward to S. Junin de Los Andes where we were supposed to sleep and continue in the day after to cross one pass to Chile. However, in the middle of the afternoon we were smashed for the beauty of a little town (S. Martin de los Andes) located in a small bay of the Lake Lácar in the Andes foothills, where the indian Puelches used to refuge during the local harsch winters. Right away, we decided to spent the sunset and the night in there. I particularly like this moment decisions that always take excitment to any trip. No schedule to follow, no definitive destinations. Next day, when passing S. Junin de los Andes, our primarly destination, we realized how good it was follow our instincts in that decision. Walk along with us in this beautiful track, with Govi (Treasure bay). I´m sure you will feel compensated.

Patagonia - The Treasure Bay from nunocruz on Vimeo.

From Esquel to Nahuel Pan in the Old Patagonian Express

After the 600km that brought us from the Atlantic to the Andinian mountains, another special move was waiting for me in Esquel. To travel in the mythic Patagonian Express (La Trochita, 75 cm width between tracks) that use to move within Esquel and El Maiten (Chubut Province), and a bit later until Inginiero Jacobacci in Rio Negro. 400 km of railroad, along the foothills of the Andes, in a steam locomotive that took around 24 hours to do. Stepping on Board just transport you to the great adventures of the conquer of American west with the Iron Horse and the lost stations in the middle of nowhere, openening far horizons.

After o good night sleep, i picked up my camera, and walked along with Sergio Correia to Esquel railway station to dive in an adventurer past that made me feel inside those fantastic movies of the old west of my childhood playground, such as that fantastic "Once upon the time in the west". From the times i was a just a fearless cowboy until, guided by Buffalo Bill and my father, i felt in love with indians and their culture well balanced with nature. Sitting Bull, Geronimo, Cochise among so many others feed my nomad soul since then.

With no more words, i invite you to travel with me & Sergio Correia, and with Ennio Morricone (The Man with Harmonica) and Las Cuerdas de Oro (El Condor Pasa), in a fantastic adventure towards the end of the world. Enjoy it with your own imagination

Patagónia - Opening the Range

Trelew-Esquel

All of a sudden, all the anguish that´s deep inside you, comes up and move out in a continuous mouvement, unloading its weight out of you. That´s what i felt as i penetrate deeply into Patagónia, from Atlantic coast (Trelew) and the base of Andes (Esquel). 600 km of an overwhelming and freeing track, through the sorrow of the infinite, sometimes stopped by a rare gas station or, yet more rarely, a little town where everything seemed closed, but where something is always open. Allow me to walk through with you and this friend of my year, Jesse Cook (That´s right and Tempest), re-tasting that unforgettable on the road moment towards Esquel where we had the old patagonian express (Trochita) to catch in our way to Nahuel Pan. If you like the music, look for the albums Vertigo and/or Nomad.

Kisses and hugs

That's Right and Tempest).

Patagónia - the Refreshing Peninsula de Valdés

Peninsula de Valdés is one of those places that makes you happy just by knowing that this pure nature still exists. That was our first step into Patagónia, driving an old (happilly old) Tata JEEP, stepping the pleasure of driving in rippio for the first time and ready for everything that was to come. Naturally, then came the Penguins, so small, so cool, so friendly that takes over of your soul, and the sea wolves or sea lions, and sea elephants, and the wales (we couldn´t not see, unfortunatly) and all their playground, in an endless mouvement like the wind. At the end of the day, the happily old car broke down and we had to watch the sun set in Puerto Pyramides, in a fantástic reggae bar where magnificent seafood was available, while waiting for someone to take us back to trelew. A "Fantastic Way to waste time".

Furthermore, as in Cinderella, our TATA pumpkin just became a 4x4 Toyota 2000 pick up (no extra charge) ready to flow with us through mountains and valleys. Someone, up in the sky, was watching over us. One word: FABULASTIC, as fabulastic is the sinchrony of Penguin Cafe Orchestra (Beanfilds and Air a Danser) with this place.

Enjoy the Film.
