The history can be told in a couple of sentences, with the intensity with only simple things can achieve.
They were grown together. Maria, white skinned, daughter of a rich land owner, and Tito, a black son of a servant of the house. Red, the blooth of both, that sustained their life together, with laughs, immense adventures, ideals and everything that can come up from the ingenuity so typical and so good of childhood and youth. And one day, unavoidably, a child was generated from the love of both. Maria´s father, a decent and fair man, lost control and killed Tito, shooting his head, in a instinctive instantaneous decision…
Maria give him back to the same ground they´ve always stepped within their happiness, sadly smiled at is father one last time and moved on to the interior of the island to give birth to the first mestizo in Cape Verde. Facing love and the hate, grief or sorrow, she had the freshness of spirit to decide for the earlier. Although she never have met him again, Maria loved is father until her final breath, melting him with Tito in her heart. And by heart she thaught is son Amor (Love, in Portuguese) to leave his life.
The father, somehow following this spirit, after overcoming the sorrow and the guilt, has dedicated is money and his life freeing slaves and fighting racial discrimination. He would die assassinated defending a slave. In the exact moment he was dying he knew he had honoured Tito e Maria.
Amor had received all this love in his soul and flew it through their future generations, not missing a single one. Until Secundino, the guy that in one afternoon set there in Cacuto (Santiago Island) having some beers (Noivas) and told me this magnificent story with the pride of descending from that love and to be a vehicle for its spread around.
I was overwhelmed by this history that in a way follows the history of Cape Verde. Born from slavery trade with some dark spots of suffering in colonial times, such as Tarrafal concentration camp (which ironically is located in a very beautiful and peaceful piece of nature), this people have known how to flourish the land they loved and at the end they have conquered their right to it. These were the true settlers of the archipelago, as their history proves. And they made a very beautiful country, marked by colour, music and joy, where the hate frequently drowns. An all of those that wanted to take without giving, remain more and more with nothing, as it happens with us, Portugal, actually.
It seemed perfect to choose the music of Mayra Andrade (Dimokransa), Cesária Évora (Bondade e Maldade) e Tito Paris (Morna P.P.V), singing the society and the human heart. With the mind (in the wise words) and with the heart (music).
