ISLANDS OF HOPE - Flirting with life

Sal, Cape Verde

Secundino had loved Solange even before meeting her.
The history had started with those usual tricks that everybody that travels by plane in Cape Verde is used to. A delay in the depart from Santiago made him lose the plane to Lisbon, to where he was going chasing an opportunity that he had created with some persistence. As a consequence, he was thrown to one of those inumerous resorts of the island while waiting for the next flight, that would be in two days. With the calm so typical of him as of any cape-verdian soul (that seem to accept everything in a cool mode, even if a piano just fall in front of them), he slided to the beach for a swim and stayed there enjoying time until he noticed the moon already so high. In his way to the restaurant for dinner, suddenly he was assalted by a voice that penetrated deep in his soul, which he then followed the voice by instinct until the bar of the hotel, where he saw a young girl singing between friends. Not knowing exactly what doing, he seated there losing the notion of time, until the group left the place. In the way out she had launched a smile towards him ((later she would tell him that she was really amazed with him staring at her from the first moment, as a statue), and by instinct he followed the group until her room.
"Do I see you tomorrow?", he heard himself asking, anxious about the answer.
"At 9.oo at breakfast. I have a plane to S. Nicolau at 11.00", she answered, always with this magnificent smile.
Secundino went to his room and felt asleep "lullabied" by that voice that entered in his life to never go way. He woke up a couple of hours late with that happy anxiety, having that deep feeling never experienced before. Pure, inocent, even childish, far beyond the love of the legacy that had shaped his own life.
And at 9.00, he was already seat in the breakfast saloon (with the sound of Mayra Andrade-Li Dente é Tchéu), with a plane ticket number to S. Nicolau in his pocket, the trip to Lisbon definitively aborted and the conquered opportunity lost for good...
