COLOMBIAN STORIES - Raquirá, Ecce Homo, Terraccotta house

Boyacá region

I get up in the morning decided to move around the colonial área of Villa de Leyva, to take everything i tis got to offer, which in reality gives me na unsuspected richness. I grab my friends while we jump into the car rented in Bogotá, and laughing out loud the happiness we feel in our hearts we just head to Raquirá (near 30 km from Villa de Leyva), another coulored colonial city that is considered the colombian capital of pottery. In 1994 it was considered one of the most beautiful places of colonial Boyacá by the Corporacion Nacional de Turismo de Colombia. In the local indian language Raquirá means the Land of Pottery. And so we got lost in that beauty full of history that ends up in a overwhelming meal in a  famous local restaurante.

And with the brain somehow dizzy by the wine that followed the meal we pu tour legs on the way towards the famous monastery that religiously rule the region. The monastery Ecce Homo that owns its title from the famous painting with the same name, that was stolen in Rome by a spanish soldier. The daughter of that soldier, Catalina Casallas, dreamt with a saint, talked to his brother and the monastery was born. In 1998 it became arquitectonic heritage of Colombia. I breath the peace that always come from thes places, but i also feel the brutality of the church on those dark times of cristianization.

From there, we just followed our path back to Villa Leyva, stopping by another local amazing place: The House of Terracotta a life project of the Colombian arquitect Octavio Mendoza, the biggest piece of pottery in the world as he like to name it. It was built exclusively by hand using only clay and baked in the sun and without any single piece of cement or steel. Inside, the rooms curve and flow into each other, as though the entire house was cast in a single mold. The dream of Mendoza gives not only the fantastic piece of work that i tis, but also points out a way to built handicraft houses making use of the most famous thing of the region (pottery). As divine as the monastery that we had visited a few hours before.

As usual, i just melt the music (Como el Humo by Mama Patxanga, Cantate Domino by Les Petites Chanteurs de Montigny, Maria Magdalene y Maria Jacobi by Tudor Consort and Be Free by Derek Clegg) that echoes in my ears, expecting to activate the travelling soul that must inhabits every soul of those that read my stories

Kisses & Hugs and… get happy.

Villa de Leyva is a colonial town founded in 1572, that lays at 2140m in the middle of the mountains of Boyacá (200-300 km from Bogotá). It was once the town for spanish families and vice-roys to relax, and, frozing in time, Villa Leyva preserved more or less intact the original characterisitics and today is considered as one of the main atractions of the Colombian National Network of Heritage Towns. It is really worthy, if you have the opportunity.

If you have legs and lungs, go towards the small santuary that you may see from that impressive plaza mayor until you see jesus in your size. One hour and an half to go climbing steep, plain of sweat, but at the end you will have waiting for you a unique view of the villa, especially to understand the real dimension of that overwhelming plaza mayor.

As usual for me in this kind of places, history penetrates my soul and my brain is swallowed by sliding histories of love and war, generosity and evil, romantism and obcurantism. I add some music to the brain (the 5th Reason by Remus, Blue Draggish by Underscore Orchestra, Go to tell it on the mountains by Petits Chanteurs de Montigny) and type in my memory the pleasure i had in that week-end with a bunch of good friends.

Kisses and hugs, especially to those with an anxious present

Villa Leiva, Colombia from nunocruz on Vimeo.

Junto-lhe uma musiquinha (the 5th Reason by Remus, Blue Draggish by Underscore Orchestra, Go to tell it on the mountains by Petits Chanteurs de Montigny) e escrevo na memória o prazer que aquele fim-de-semana me deu com um punhado de gente muito boa.

BOLIVARIANDO - Step by step

Honda, Mariquita, Armero

Life is to be tasted step by step. I believe that. Sometimes we fall, get hurt, a tear drop rolls down your face. You must get up and move on. Because where there is a needle, there will be a rose for you to enjoy. It is just ahead. the needle is there to let you know that if you keep moving you will have a pleasure to enjoy. And harder is the needle, stronger will be the pleasure. I like, because of that, to taste all the moments i have. The good and the bad, together.
And so i move with two friends, Cristina and Maria, with a lot of stories to tell. Crossing the'mountains on a slow path on the tail of big trucks, we arrived to the city that was once the most importante harbour (in the river) serving the development of Bogotá. The city of Honda a magnificent spot of old colonial times, located in the'margins of river Madalena. Further on, we meet another rose of colombia, Mariquita, the capital of fruit, which gives me the pelasure of Mangustinos i have not tried before. Fantastic. Moving again we touch the tragedy of Armero, where 20.000 people lost their lives under a wave of water and magma, in 1985. The town is now a immense graveyard, between the skeleton that emerge from theground. Survivors just moved away, re-building teir livessomewhere else. I invite yiu to come along with us and the music of Beirut.
See you in the next trip. I wish you many needles and many roses.

BOLIVARIANDO - Step by step from nunocruz on Vimeo.

BOLIVARIANDO - Life is a constant nomading

Bogotá, Colombia (2700m)

The intense headache that left over from last party, cool down the nerve and threw me to a reflexive state. I decide to take a look over Bogotá, that immense capital of Colombia, where the whole population can fit in (10.000.000 persons). I feel the change in the scale when, taken by the hands of Javier and Adriana, i climb to the Cerro of Monserrate (3720m), and from there look 500m down and can feel how huge is it. I lost the breath and imagination bursts out. Javier points out Plaza Bolivar, and i fall in love with that adventurer of life that freed half of America from the Spanish rule. The other half was conquered by the argentinian José Martin, whom i had the chance to "meet", a few years ago in Buenos Aires, by the hand of a fantastic taxi driver.  The life of these two make me sure that the true dimension of a person can only be understood when life is over. Before that, it is always incomplete and the further steps are continuously and sucessively changing all of its meaning.

I move down the 500m and walk full of pleasure into the old town (Candelária), blown by the sound of a Colombian Jazz (Jazz Gitano) that i had the chance to listen, here in Bogotá. The music get in through my ears directly to the heart. Instintively the heart gives it to the soul. I look into the life that slides in front of my eyes, and an idea that was always in my soul just start coming up: Life is a constant nomading. Physical and spiritual. Finally calm, i fall asleep in peace.

See you next week.

BOLIVARIANDO - The other side of the Tunnel

Zipaquirá, Sopó, Colombia

I Just come out (from the gallery) to the daylight. It blinds me. Totally. I can’t see a damn thing. It is a white towel, in front of me. I have No Idea. I´m a bit lost. A deaf anguish takes over. An enthusiasm swallow me, kissing my soul.
I left so many things behind, due to the circumstances. People, places, nature, hearts. I feel naked, completely naked. Some I know I will get back. Some will slowly vanish. Not because they won´t worth, but because it is like that, the movement.
I face my “in front”. Shaky. The light is not so strong, the towel is not so white. I foresee the shadows of the things and of the people. Fear invades me, stimulus hold it back.
I look in front, again. More in-balance. Step by step, the colour gets its life. A shy smile, two of them together that tender your heart, one laugh out loud, a “wined” dinner with fantastic company.
I left so many things back. I brought another many, with me. And many things I have to grab, in the path in front of me.
Come with me and Rodrigo Leão (Ya Skaju Tebe) through Zipaquirá, then Sopó towards Bogotá, to seat in Antara’s (Peruvian food in Bogotá), listening to (and dancing) some jazz music, while drinking as many Piscos as you can take. Dance with me and with some of my friends. New friends for me, new friends for you.

See you next week

Corri o longo túnel e saio do lado de lá. Uma luz ofusca-me os olhos e não me deixa ver coisa nenhuma. É um pano branco na frente. Não faço ideia, simplesmente. Uma angústia surda assola-me.
Invade-me o medo, inunda-me o estímulo.

So many people forced to move way in our days, looking for a decent life. Many families have been touched by that issue. As our ancesters in the middle of last century were forced to. Difficult. So many emotions transbord the souls of those leaving and those staying back.
First it comes the rage against those incompetents and corrupts that smashed the possibility of a sustainable life in your country. How careless they were
Then arises the fear & enthusiasm by the unknown you have in front of you,
Then the pain & suffering of separation.
In time you will put your feet on the stable ground again and you will know that you have been living a good adventure. With all the adventures and disadventures that compose it. It is just the adventure of life.

I really hope that this general movement mix the souls of the people from all around the world, through their cultures, their emotions, their loves. May we find a way of building a better world, based in love, in respect for nature and for its diversity.
Join me with that mixing spirit, enjoying the music of the amazing portuguese Rodrigo Leão blowing through the fantastic colombian "La Catedral del Sal de Zipaquirá", where i was taken by Javier Camacho, a colombian that once lived in Portugal, and from where he departed with the heart full of love.
We mix our cultures, we build our frienship, we will have a common path in our hearts that will last forever.

COLOMBIA - La Catedral del Sal from nunocruz on Vimeo.
