A PhD on the Road (Brasil)

Brazilian people was always a good example i tried to follow, specially in this PhD business, because of their capacity of improvising, enjoy the moment and always make the things move on.
And that´s what i believe most, by this time. You have to plan things, but you have to make it happen, even before you are ready for that. You have to enjoy the moment, learn with it, improvise everytime it is needed. And that way, i believe you can really create worthy things.

PLANNING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING OF MODERN TIMES. BUT TO CREATE A NEW THING YOU HAVE GOT TO FORGET ABOUT PLANNING AND IMPROVISATION IS THE KEY WORD.

I hope i can have some of this brazilian soul which make them the best engineers in the world

So i picked up the train from Paranaguá (Main Port of Paraná State) to the Capital Curitiba, in an old (one century) line, which was studied by our best father Karl Terzaghi. It was an honour to follow some of his footsteps. Fantastic journey with some typical brazilian music undoubtfully related to the Peão life (Almir Sater - Cavaleiro da Lua or Moon Rider)

Os brasileiros sempre me fascinaram pela sua capacidade de improviso, de reagirem com o momento das coisas e fazerem os assuntos andarem para a frente. Tão importante para mim isso, tanto na vida em geral como neste assunto do PhD. É bom pensar bem nas coisas, mas é importante pô-las em movimento num estado longe do perfeito, ter capacidade de improvisação sempre que seja necessário e acima de tudo viver o momento com um sorriso na boca. Só assim se consegue realmente criar algo.

PLANEAMENTO É UMA COISA INEVITÁVEL NOS TEMPOS MODERNOS. MAS PARA CRIAR ALGO DE NOVO, É NECESSÁRIO ESQUECER O PLANEMANETO E TER A CORAGEM DE IMPROVISAR, EM PRIMEIRO LUGAR. O PLANEAMENTO TEM QUE VIR DEPOIS DA CRIAÇÃO

Eu cá espero ter conseguido incorporar essa capacidade que fez dos brasileiros os maiores engenheiros do mundo. Pensam e arriscam. Ás vezes sai bem, outras nem por isso. Mas há sempre o levantar e tentar de novo.


Neste sentido, apanhei um comboio na linha centenária de Paranaguá para Curititba, onde andou o "meu" Karl Terzaghi 100 anos atrás. Um passeio lindo, lindo acompanhado por uma música que me lembra a vida de peão (Almir Star, Cavaleiro da Lua).
