A PhD on the Road (China)

Shangai

"The nature of men is identical. It is their habits which make them apart". Confúcio

I always felt touched by the simplicty of chinese culture based in the magnificent wisdom thoughts of Confúcio. Like Chinese, i always look for the best things of each person, or culture, and try to learn from it. That´s why i use some of their sayings to guide some steps of my life. I don´t resist to write down some for you that are deeply related with this double tour around the world and around the mind (include the sayings in the movie).

"What i hear, i forget. What i see, i remember. What i do, i learn"

"Choose a task you love and you will not work one single day of your life"

"The good man demands everything from himself. The mediocre one expects everything from others"

"Knowing what is right and not do it, is the worst of cowardness"

"The personality of a man is better known by his mistakes"

"Those who recognize their lack of knowledge reveal wisdom. Those who don't just live in a deep illusion"

Pudong is a symbol of modern Shangai, with its TV Tower and a multitude of Skycrappers which gives a image of the future of China. I can not miss the duty of telling you the amazing the chinese capacity of building almost 200 Skycrappers in less than 15 years. So if you are interested in having a glance of that just walk through it with me, followed by a nice night boat cruise in the river. I´m sure that you will enjoy it.

Next week I will drop by in Taiwan, to see and compare this China with the one coming out from chinese (nationalist) that followed Chiang Kai-shek, the hero of re-unification of China, who was later defeated by Mao Tsé-Tung. nd then i´ll re-enter again in China to taste the western flavoured Hong-Kong and "our" Macau.

I´d like to leave a Big Congratulation for Cristiana Ferreira by its PhD title, under a theme that is very important for mine. Big Kiss for you, Cristiana.
See you then

Potenciando as boas e minimizando as más.

A PhD on the Road (China)

Shangai

Shangai is a fantastic example of the capacity to combine of the chinese which, as i said before (see the side bar), is something i truly believe.

Chinese have shown through the years their ability to be patient, learn and take the best of a bad situation. After the Opium wars the english first and then french, american and russians demand some concessions and the control of the sea. The combination of both and the usual facility of the chinese to learn with other cultures and incorporate them as a mode of evolution, made of Shangai a "capitalist" organized system inside feudal (first) and communist (later) society, which has been lasting to our days, as can be illustrated with the first appearance in china of railway, post office, elevator, tap water, car, trolley, film projection, bank, gas lamp, telephone, gramophone or department store, etc. Today´s is the economical capital of China, motor of development, innovation of the country and recently the main door of comunication with the outside world (due to its strategic position near by China sea).

I always thought of tea as a refined social drink, such it is the Port wine for we portuguese. And so i travelled around with my companions trying to find a place for an unique moment with that within our stay in the city. And we just ended up in a nice tea house located in the Old Town's Yuyuan Garden, near the Ziga-zag bridge, after visiting the City God's Temple. And i knew that i was right, it is really a refined drink which creates a refined moment.

To be representing the combined soul of shangai i combined western music (Hard to Concentrate, Red Hot Chili Peppers) with traditional chinese's.

See you next week for Pudong and Shangai´s night.

A PhD on the Road (China)

Shangai

"Shangai is a sea city. It neighbors the sea into which Yangtze River flows through here. Altough younger than those cities with centuries-old history abd grand imperial palaces. Shangai´s feature is most apparen in its vigor and livingness."
Shen Yicheng, China.

So here i am, a bit late, but always in time.

I´m a Lucky Man (The Verve), arriving in Shangai by MAGLEV (Magnetic Levitation Train) with 3 sweet princesses (Gabi, Sara e Sandra) and a prince (António Viana) of the West. That´s the good thing about globetrotters. We are meeting everywhere, everytime.

Today is Gabi birthdate and so we tought that would be a nice present to go through the Lovers walk in the New Bund, a eternal symbol of Shangai, move along Nanjing road (Nº1 comercial street in China) to buy a nice gift and end up in the amazing sightseeing tunnel, which connects the Bund and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, with chinese romantic music (China Philarmonic, with a very difficult title) . Just enjoy the sights in a first approach, and wait for the next weeks and i tell you about this wonderful city and its unique soul. Today is just to sing happybirthday to a princess of the West.

See ya, in the weekend.

Cá estou de novo. Já pensavam que eu tinha zarpado, não? Ou que iria falhar uma semana. Nem pensar nisso. Não me conhecem?

Cá estou eu, homem feliz (Lucky Man, the Verve) chegando a Shangai no MAGLEV (MAGnética LEVitação) com 3 doces princesas (Gabi, Sandra e Sara) do Ocidente, pajeadas por mim e pelo António (Viana da Fonseca).
